Electrical and Instrumentation Senior Technician

Main Responsibilities

  • Installing, configuring, calibrating and maintaining control, measurement and indicating instrumentation (pneumatic, analog & digital)
  • Configuring and programming the DCS (Logic Gates)
  • Inspecting and testing the operation of instruments and process control systems to diagnose faults with the aim to maximize equipment reliability & reducing the cost of maintenance
  • Calibrating instrumentation components and process control systems to improve plant efficiency and reduce cost of production
  • Maintaining various computer-based control systems (DCS, Drives, etc)
  • Create diagrams and technical documentation such as schematics, manuals, standards and codes when required
  • Maintaining backup and revision documentation for control systems and instrumentation
  • Oversee projects by coordinating with the E&I Engineer and external suppliers regarding project requirements and timelines
  • Oversee the use, care, and operation of process control, instrumentation, electrical, and related equipment
  • Oversee the repair of instrumentation systems, equipment and components, both in the field and in the MCC and Rack Rooms
  • Oversee installing and maintaining electrical control systems and instrumentation systems including electronics, programmable controllers, meters, generators, transmitters, hydraulics, pneumatics and a variety of other systems; inspect installed systems to ensure proper operation
  • Design and modify control logics when required
  • Respond to emergency call-outs on nights, weekends and holidays
  • Identify causes of equipment failures and repetitive repairs by being involved in RCFA and other failure analysis methods. Agree on corrective action plans with the plant engineers
  • Assist the E&I Technicians with unplanned maintenance tasks such as “breakdown maintenance” and any other “ad-hoc” work arising daily
  • Assist the Production and Maintenance Departments in solving plant related problems
  • Ensure that works performed by external service providers are executed to the agreed standard and that they work safely at all times and are compliant with Twinsaver safety requirements
  • Work with management in establishing and overseeing goals and objectives for PM4 Paper Mill.
  • Continuously coach and develop the E&I Technicians
  • Furnish the production department with technical support as required
  • Furnish the mechanical department with technical support as required
  • Ensures a professional level of plant inspections and housekeeping
  • Captures all work undertaken in the EAM System
  • Participate in maintenance shutdowns
  • Generation of maintenance schedules
  • Generation of plant SOP’s
  • Generates critical spares and stock applications
  • Ensures continuous plant optimizations
  • Manages and lead the E&I team when the E&I Foreman is on leave or not available
  • Actively drive and support all Twinsaver strategic programs e.g. Safety, Health and Risk, Asset Management, High Performance Culture, ISO 9001 & 14001 programs. Directs the E&I maintenance work force and provides on-site expertise

Formal Qualifications

  • National Diploma (Electrical) or B.Tech (Electrical) is essential, with a recognized Electrical and/or Instrumentation trades will be advantageous
  • Matric with maths and science
  • Knowledge and experience of VSD’s, PLC’s or DCS systems, motors and related equipment

Work Experience

  • 5 years or above solid plant maintenance experience with appropriate qualification
  • Computer literate
  • Knowledge of tissue mills/pulp and paper plant operations will be an advantage
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance principles and systems
  • Good knowledge and experience of Instrumentation & Control Engineering
  • Good knowledge of applying control theory to design systems with desired behaviors – i.e. Root Cause Failure Analysis
